From September 2026 the Government is introducing new legislation requiring
all schools to limit the number of compulsory branded uniform and PE items. This requirement is
designed to ensure that school uniform remains affordable for families.
In preparation for this change, we have reviewed our uniform policy to make sure it meets the new
Department for Education guidance. For Hornchurch High, the change is minimal as we already met
this guidance. The guidance states that schools should keep compulsory branded items to three or
fewer (or four items for secondary/middle schools if one of them is a tie).
Our compulsory branded items from September 2026 will be:
1. School tie
2. School blazer
3. PE polo shirt
4. PE shorts or track pants
These four items comply with the guidance because one is a tie. All other items in the uniform i.e.
trousers and shirts can be purchased from any retailer, provided they meet the school’s stated style
and colour requirements.
Trousers and Skirts
The default and standard uniform for all students is black tailored trousers. These are non-branded,
widely available, affordable and meet the Department for Education’s guidance on limiting compulsory
branded items.
For families who wish their child to wear a skirt, we provide a single school-approved skirt option,
which came into effect from September 2025 for all new starters, or parents/carers seeking
replacement items. Wearing a skirt is optional, not compulsory and only the approved school skirt is
permitted to ensure a consistent and professional appearance.
Black tailored trousers must be made from a woven, non-stretch or minimal-stretch school-trouser
fabric and have a tailored straight-leg style. Jersey, stretch, skinny-fit, tight-fitting, flares or denim-style
trousers are not permitted. Tailored trousers are widely available from supermarkets and high street
retailers.
Optional Branded Items
Additional branded items are available through our supplier, such as the school jumper or multi-sports
top. These items are not required, but families may purchase them if they wish. The school jumper is
a popular choice but not required. This approach ensures that our uniform remains affordable, while
giving families the option to buy additional items if they choose, in line with the Department for
Education’s guidance, which states that schools should limit the number of compulsory branded items
(DfE guidance, GOV.UK).
Affordability and Access
Where to purchase our uniform
We remain committed to keeping uniform costs as low as possible. Our suppliers have confirmed
competitive pricing for the branded items and all non-branded items may be purchased from any
suitable retailer. If any family is experiencing financial difficulty, please contact the school in
confidence so that we can offer support. We also have a Pre-loved Shop that provides affordable,
quality items, helping families save while promoting sustainability and community support.
Our uniform can be purchased form Havering School Wear (www.haveringschoolwear.co.uk). Some specific items of school uniform (including ties and items which bear the school logo, including blazers and PE kit) can only be purchased at Havering School Wear. Other generic items of school uniform (such as socks or shirts) can be purchased more widely.
