Havering’s Mayor praised pupils from Hornchurch High School for their community spirit when they turned into local volunteers for the day recently.
Year 10 students stepped out in the community in what they called a Drop Down Day to litter pick, pack bags at Tesco supermarket, plant bulbs and shrubs and sort and clean items at a charity shop.
The day was arranged by their school and Havering Volunteers to help pupils to help them get more involved in their local community to find out more about their borough and to take pride in their surroundings.
Their efforts were rewarded with a trip to Havering Town Hall where they met the Mayor Councillor Dilip Patel and were presented with certificates to acknowledge their efforts.
Councillor Dilip Patel said:
“The young people are a real credit to the borough and have learned so much about what a difference it can make to a community when we come together and work with the same purpose.”
Shelley Hart, CEO of Havering Volunteers, added:
“Young people are often getting bad publicity, blamed for anti-social behaviour and all the knife crime that is happening. These students were a real credit and each and every one of them should feel proud of the achievements they made that day. We are proud to have been part of this drop down day.”“The organisations that the children supported were amazing and felt that the day was really worthwhile.”
She added that one student was particularly upset that after he had picked up litter someone had dropped more.
“He said he will think twice about any rubbish he has and dispose of it properly from now on,” she said.
